Lesson Notes

Words & Phrases

  • I am doing alright, but I have a slight headache from my new eyeglasses.

    • When did you buy them? (NOT it)

  • Contact lenses made my eyes look bloodshot.

Grammar

  • “Eyeglasses” is plural we need to use a plural pronoun; “them” not “it”

    • It might take a week or so to get used to them.

    • I lost my sunglasses. I can’t find them anywhere

Appropriate Language

  • "Bloodshot" means having red eyes, the blood vessels in your eyes become enlarged.

    • After staying up all night, his eyes were bloodshot.

    • She had bloodshot eyes from crying for hours.

Nouns Review

  • “My contacts are giving me a headache.”

    • “Headaches” are countable.

  • "I'm sorry, but I've forgotten your name. I can never remember names.”

    • We don’t use an article with plural nouns like “names”

  • "I usually listen to the radio while I'm having breakfast.”

    • We use “the radio” to talk about the general idea or medium of radio, not a specific radio station

  • "I don't usually like staying at hotels, but last summer we spent two weeks at a very nice hotel by the sea.”

  • "Kyomi is an economist. She lives in Japan and works for an investment company.”

  • I have two brothers. The older one is training to be a pilot with British Airways. The younger one is still at school. When he leaves school, he wants to go to university to study law.”

    • “The” is used because you’re referring to specific brothers.

    • “British Airways” doesn’t need an article, as it is a proper noun.

    • “School” and “university” don’t need articles when referring to a place for study.

  • A: What happened to your bicycle? The front wheel is bent.
B: I ran into a parked car when I swerved to avoid a cat on the street.
A: Did you damage the car?
    B: A little.
    A: What did you do?
B: I left a note for the owner of the car.
A: what did you wrote on the note?
B: My name and address. I also wrote an apology.
