Words & Phrases

  • I got back from my holiday the day before yesterday.

  • The people in Portugal are down to earth.

  • The area felt very religious. The site was impressive.

  • My trip never felt dangerous, the country seemed very safe.

  • How many people were in your tour group?

    • There were five couples and three other women.

  • The scenery along the coast was foggy and grey.

    • The scenery in winter was all white.

  • There are a lot of hilly roads around Shinyurigaoka.

  • I enjoyed the vast majority of my trip. (= 80% or over)

  • On a crowded train, you should be careful of pickpockets.

    • The area is easy pickings for pickpockets.

  • How did you go to Portugal?

    • I flew through Frankfurt to Porto.

  • How did you come back to Tokyo?

    • We flew from Lisbon, stopped in Munich, and landed at Haneda.

Appropriate Language

  • Down to earth” is an idiom meaning that the people are friendly and approachable.

  • A winery” is a place where wine is made and sometimes sold.

    • We visited a winery in Porto to test some local wines.

  • A brewery” is a place where beer or (sake / rice wine) is made

    • The brewery has a tour that shows how beer is brewed.

    • There is a nihonshu brewery shop at Komae station.

  • A distillery” is a place where alcohol drinks like whiskey, vodka, gin and shochu are distilled.

    • They took a tour of the distillery to learn how whiskey is made.

  • The vast majority” can mean more than 80%

    • The majority” can mean more than 50%, but usually around 60-80%.
