Words & Phrases

  • I think my eyes are getting tired. It often happens when I’m watching TV or reading.

  • I went to the ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) doctor to get some medicine.

  • He achieved 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases.

  • The flood waters were two metres high at a convenience store.

  • An emergency heavy rain warning was issued Saturday for Noto.

    • The weather front is sitting over this area. (Front; (noun) the moving edge of a mass of air; cold front, warm front)

  • How’s your new house? Is it still under construction?

    • The plot is still empty, they haven’t started yet. (Plot; (noun) a small piece of ground marked out for a purpose such as building or gardening)

  • It takes ten minutes to walk up home.

    • It takes a little less to walk down to the station.

  • The clinic has about twenty parking spaces.

    • The baby clinic has painless deliveries.

  • The weather forecast said to expect temperatures in the high twenties or low thirties until October.

Appropriacy

“Linear rainbands" isn't commonly used in everyday conversation. It's more of a technical or meteorological term; here are a couple of ways we prefer to say

  • There are bands of torrential rain.

  • We're getting waves of heavy rain.

  • It keeps pouring in bursts.
