Topic: Adjective + Preposition 02

In this lesson we will cover the different uses of adjectives with prepositions.

NOTE: This is only an introduction to adjectives and prepositions, there are other situations and contexts when we will use different prepositions. We will look at these during the lesson as well.

Section A: Adjective + of (01)

“Afraid / frightened / terrified / scared” + of …

  • A: Are you afraid of spiders?
    B: Yes, I’m terrified of them.

“Fond / proud / ashamed / jealous / envious” + of …

  • Why are you always so jealous of other people?

“Suspicious / critical / tolerant” + of …

  • He didn’t trust me. He was suspicious of my actions.

Section B: Adjective + of (02)

“Aware / conscious” + of …

  • A: Did you know he was married?
    B: No, I wasn’t aware of that.

“Capable / incapable” + of …

  • I’m sure you are capable of passing the examination.

“Full / short” + of …

  • Amy is a very active person. She’s always full of energy.

  • I’m short of money. Can you lend me some?

“Typical” + of …

  • He’s late again. It’s so typical of him to keep everybody waiting.

“Certain / sure” + (of / about) …

  • I think she’s arrive this evening, but I’m not sure of that.

Section C: Adjective + (at / to / from / in / on / with / for)

“Good / bad / brilliant / better / hopeless etc” + at …

  • I’m not very good at repairing things.

“Married / engaged” + to …

  • Louise is married to an American.

  • Louise is married with three children. (= She is married and has three children)

“Similar” + to …

  • Your hand writing is similar to mine.

“Different” + (from / to) …

  • The film was different from what I had thought it would be.

    • The film was different to what I had thought it would be.

“Interested” + in …

  • Are you interested in art?

  • Would you be interested in going to the movies next weekend?

“Crowded” + with (people etc)

  • The bus was crowded with tourists.

  • The streets were crowded with excited fans after the baseball game.

“Famous” + for …

  • What is your country famous for?

“Responsible” + for …

  • Who is responsible for all the damage to my new car?

Vocabulary

  • Hand lotion; lighter in texture, ideal for daily use, and suitable for normal to slightly dry skin

  • Hand cream; thicker and more soothing, typically used during colder seasons

  • Forge; (verb) produce a fraudulent copy or imitation of (a document, signature, banknote, or work of art)

  • Full of life; (phrase) very energetic and active.

Adjective + Prepositions

  • Avid (about / for)

    • Sarah is avid about cooking and spends hours experimenting with new recipes.

    • Jake is avid about environmental conservation and actively participates in local clean-up efforts.

    • Mark is avid for adventure and is always seeking new challenges to tackle.

    • Lisa is avid for knowledge, constantly reading and learning about various subjects.

  • Keen on; showing interested in (something / someone)

    • I’m not all that keen on sports.

    • We stayed at home because Michael wasn’t very keen on going out.

  • Keen for; shows eagerness or enthusiasm

    • I am keen for the hiking trip this weekend.

    • She is keen for the chance to showcase her artistic talents at the exhibition.

    • They are keen for the new job opportunity.

  • I'm not very good at badminton."

    • I'm not very good at playing badminton.
