Words & Phrases

  • When was the baby’s due date? (= the date the baby is expected)

    • The due date was two days ago.

  • When I was in university wine was cheaper than water. (NOT When I was university)

    • They drank a lot of wine.

  • Chile; country name

    • Chilean; (adj) relating to Chile

    • I am a fan of Chilean wines. (= wines from Chile)

  • Spring onion / Green onion

    • We ate a strange soba meal, you eat the soba with a green onion chopstick.

  • Have you tried acupuncture?

    • I visited the acupuncturist for my shoulder.

  • One of the horses moved to a (farm / ranch).

Pronunciation

  • Acupuncture ( ækjʊˌpʌŋ(k)tʃə ) AC-u-punc-ture

  • Ranch ( rɑːn(t)ʃ ) ranch

Appropriacy

  • In everyday usage, it is common to use the specialist title (“dentist / dermatologist / massage therapist / acupuncturist“) rather than describing the practice or field (“dentistry / dermatology / massage therapy / acupuncture“).
