Lesson Notes November 7, 2023 (TUESDAY ZOOM)

  • This weekend we will see a return to normal autumn temperatures.

  • The train stopped for about 10 minutes between Shinyurigaoka and Ikuta. I believe it was because of a blackout.

    • I heard the thunder, and maybe a lightning strike causes the blackout.

  • Last Thursday there was an accident at Yurigaoka station. I figured it was a suicide.

  • I took the Tadami Line to see the beautiful (autumn / autumnal) foliage.

    • The line was going to be closed due to lack of (passengers / ridership).

  • I bought a sweater a couple of years ago, it’s just sitting there collecting dust.

  • Do you shop online? (“Net shopping” sounds slightly dated)

    • Do you ever do online shopping?

  • Do you ever impulse shop?

    • Yes, this sweater I am wearing was an impulse buy.

Vocabulary

  • Foliage; (uncountable noun) plant leaves

  • Ridership; (noun) the number of passengers using a particular form of public transport

  • Man-made; (adj) made or caused by human beings; artificial

    • Antonyms; natural, real

  • Heavy-rotation; the frequent and repeated playing of a particular song or album on the radio, by a DJ, or in a playlist

    • Can be used figuratively to talk about clothes, bags, shoes etc

Words which have similar meanings

  • Complex: Something is complex when it has many parts or aspects that are connected. It's like a big puzzle with lots of pieces.

  • Complicated: Complicated things are difficult to understand because they have many steps or parts that interact in a confusing way. Think of a complex math problem – it's complicated because you need to do many things to solve it.

  • Detailed: Detailed means there is a lot of information about something. For example, a detailed map shows many small features like roads, rivers, and landmarks.

  • Intricate: Intricate means something has very small and delicate details. Imagine a spider's web – it's intricate because of all the tiny threads.

  • Complex: Simple

  • Intricate: Simple or Uncomplicated

  • Complicated: Simple or Easy

  • Detailed: Simple or General
