Topic: Verb + Preposition 03

In this lesson we will be looking at various prepositions that come after certain words.

Section A

  • Of

    • Sue accused me of being selfish.

    • I disapproved of the family’s vacation destination.

    • A: What did he die (of / from)?
      B: I heard it was a heart attack.

    • The meal was huge! It consisted of seven courses.

  • For

    • I didn’t have enough money to pay for the meal.

    • I forgot to thank my neighbours for the lovely gift.

    • I apologized to my neighbours for my bad manners.

    • Everybody blamed me for the accident.

  • On

    • A: What time will you be home?
      B: I am not sure. It depends on the traffic.

    • Michael’s salary is very low. It isn’t enough to live on.

    • The meal was delicious. I complimented Mark on his cooking skills.

Section B

  • In

    • Do you believe in aliens?

    • My daughter is a lawyer. She specializes in estate law.

    • I hope you succeed in finding the perfect job for you.

  • Into

    • Our house was broken into a few days ago.

    • I bumped into a lady today, which caused her to drop her cell phone.

    • Can you divide the cake into 10 pieces?

    • She’s a famous writer. Her books have been translated into many languages.

  • With

    • There was an accident this morning. A bus collided with a car.

    • Can you fill this pot with water for me?

    • The hotel provides you with all the amenities you need for a relaxing stay.

  • To

    • What happened to those flowers you planted last spring? (= where are those flowers now?)

    • We are only inviting a few people to our wedding.

    • I prefer tea to coffee.

  • On

    • Make sure you concentrate on what you are doing, so as not to make any mistakes.

    • I wanted to go alone, but some friends of mine insisted on coming with me.

    • How much do you spend on food each month?

Pay

  • Pay (somebody) for

    • I didn’t have enough cash on me to pay for the movie tickets. I had to use my credit card.

    • I paid my friend for looking after my house while I was gone for a month.

  • Pay (a bill / a fine / a fee / tax / rent / a sum of money etc); we do not use a preposition

Believe

  • Believe something; believe it is true

    • They story can’t be true. I don’t believe it.

  • Believe somebody; believe they are telling the truth

    • I believe him when he said he got lost.
