Lesson Notes November 14, 2023 (Elementary)
I could see Mt Fuji from my balcony today. The top of the mountain is covered in snow.
Is it the peak season for leaves changing colours?
One of the pools at the onsen was lukewarm.
A: What symptoms did you have?
B: After a few days I had a cough. After several days I had (little / no) energy.The flu is going around these days.
There is a bad cold going around my son’s elementary school.
The glass is 0.1% to 1% radioactive. (= zero point one percent)
My smartphone was pickpocketed. (NOT I was pickpocketed my smartphone)
Did you have carryon luggage only?
I had one checked bag and one carry-on bag.
When I travel I have only one piece of carry-on luggage. (NOT one luggage)
Vocabulary
Lukewarm / Tepid; (adj) especially for a liquid, only slightly warm
Go around; (phrase) especially for an illness, spreading from person to person
(Carry-on / Checked) luggage
The Body
For part of the arms, legs and back we can say;
upper arm, lower arm, upper leg, lower leg, upper back, lower back
For the bottom of a person we can use backside / buttocks / bum / (ass - slang, impolite)
Don’t confuse these two words
Hip; each side of your pelvis (the bony structure forming your hips and connecting the spine to the legs)
I stood waiting with my hand on my hip.
My grandmother fell last winter and broke her left hip.
Hips; the round width of both sides of your hips and around the buttocks
When you dance remember to move your hips.
His hips are too big, he won’t fit into his jeans.
