Words & Phrases

  • My weeping sakura is starting to bloom. The flowers look to be pure white.

    • My dwarf peach tree has been in full bloom for about a week.

  • A group is going to appeal the ruling. (More natural and direct)

    • A group is going to appeal against the ruling.

    • A group is going to file an appeal against the ruling. (More formal)

  • It’s a tricky song to sing, getting the rhythm is hard.

  • One of the participants is 77.

    • One participant is 77.

  • Inhaling and exhaling are important for singing.

  • My doctor tested my lung capacity. He said the results were bad for my age.

  • They poured concrete into the well so that no one could use it.

  • Public hearing (noun); A meeting where members of the public can hear about and discuss government or community issues.

    • The council held a public hearing to discuss the new zoning laws.

    • Citizens attended the public hearing to voice their concerns about the project.

    • The mayor listened carefully during the public hearing to understand the community’s needs.

  • Some areas across Japan want to (start / implement) a vacancy tax law.

    • In Canada, this is called the Underused Housing Tax, which is (commonly called / referred to as) “the vacancy tax”.

Appropriate Language

  • Followers: This term is often used for people who practice Buddhism, Shintoism, and other religions, as it emphasizes the act of following a specific teacher or set of teachings.

  • Believers: This term is more commonly associated with Christianity and other religions where faith and belief are central.

  • Both words refer to people who practice or believe in these religions, but “follower” is more about practicing the religion, and “believer” focuses on faith.

  • Dry throat: Feels dry or lacking moisture, often causing discomfort or a need to drink.

  • Itchy throat: Feels irritated, making you want to cough or clear your throat, often due to allergies.

  • Scratchy throat: Feels rough or painful, often due to a cold or viral infection.
