Lesson Notes March 14, 2023 (TUESDAY ZOOM)

  • Bout; (noun) a wrestling or boxing match

    • The sumo wrestler that I like surprisingly won two bouts already!

    • In his boxing career he fought 30 bouts, and only lost 2.

  • Register; (noun) a book or record of attendance

    • At the entrance of the exhibit we left a register for people to sign their name and address.

  • Interpretation; the understanding or meaning that someone derives from an exhibition etc

    • One man said he thought the theme of the exhibition was praying, that was his interpretation of the exhibit.

    • After reading a poem, one person may interpret it as a commentary on societal issues, while another person may interpret it as a personal reflection on the poet's life experiences.

  • I have several different flowers growing randomly in my yard. (= on my property)

    • I planted some tulips in my garden. (= a space for growing flowers, vegetables etc)

    • She has some herbs in a flower box on her balcony. (= a small box in which flowers, vegetables, herbs etc can be grown)

    • In my house I have several potted plants. (= plants in pots)

  • Appraiser; a person whose job is to assess the monetary value of something, or assess the authenticity of something

  • Flea market; a street market selling second-hand goods.

    • Rummage sale; a sale of miscellaneous second-hand (esp. to raise money for a charity)

    • Garage sale; a sale of unwanted household goods held in the garage or front garden of someone's house

    • Yard sale; a sale of miscellaneous second-hand items held in the garden of a private house.

  • Perennial (adj) (of a plant) living for several years

    • Peonies are perennial.

  • Perennial (noun) a perennial plant

    • Perennials will transform your garden in summer into a beautiful landscape.

  • Annual (adj) (of a plant) living only for a year or less, perpetuating itself by seed

    • Annuals (noun) an annual plant

  • Biennial (adj) (of a plant) taking two years to grow from seed to fruition and die

    • Biennials (noun) a biennial plant
