Topic: Making Small Talk

Lesson Notes March 14, 2023 (Elementary)

  • Root for; (verb phrase) support or hope for the success of a person

    • I am rooting for Japan to win the WBC.

    • Last weekend, I rooted for my friend while they ran a marathon.

  • In Japan there are festivals for children, for girls we have doll decorations, and for boys we have helmet decorations. Some houses fly carp (banner / flags).

  • Be born

    • My daughter was born two years after my son. (NOT I born my daughter)

      • I gave birth to my daughter …

    • I was born in 1979.

    • Where was he born?

  • My favourite pasty chef had an event at Isetan, his cakes are beautiful and artistic.

Making Small Talk

  • How was your weekend?

    • What was your weekend like?

  • What pastries does he make?

    • What are his pastries like?

  • Do you have children’s festivals in Canada?

    • What are children’s festivals like in Canada?

Homework:

Use the following list of nouns to make “like” questions. We will practice these questions in the next lesson.

  • traffic, people, restaurants, cafes, museums, shops, beach, streets, parks, schools, history, local events, festivals

  • Try to think of at least two other nouns to make a question about someone’s hometown

You will make 13 questions using the nouns, plus two more questions you think of

For example: - “What is your hometown like?” (remember your verb and noun should match)
