Topic: Weekends

Lesson Notes June 20, 2023 (Elementary)

  • I went to a wine party on the fortieth floor of a condominium.

    • I made a quiche for the party. (NOT at the party)

    • I drank wine at the party.

    • What kinds of wine did you drink?

    • It was a hot day, so all the white wines were very good.

  • What’s the best way to cool a bottle of white wine at home?

    • Put crushed ice in a bucket with a little salt.

  • I went to a museum with my oldest granddaughter.

    • She had a kid’s lunch, it cost ¥1650.

      • Common; One thousand six hundred fifty yen

      • Casual; Sixteen hundred fifty yen

  • The action scenes were too flashy. (= too much happening, too many special effects)

    • I went to a concert after work. I saw their concert five years ago. (NOT I could see)

    • Their concert is always free admission. At the Christmas concert you can (give / make) a donation.

Weekends

  • A: I got up late in the morning.
    B: I think you had a terrible morning.

  • A: I went Tom Cruise on the air plane.
    B: I think you have a crazy plane ride!

  • I went shopping, I could buy a backpack at a low price. (NOT at a low cost)

  • A: I went shopping, but I took the wrong train.
    B: That’s too bad, you had a terrible weekend.

Responding

People often make small responses to show they are listening in a conversation

  • “Hmm” - shows you are thinking or thinking about what the other person said

  • “Oh” - shows surprise or interest

  • “Really?” - shows surprise or curiosity; tells the speakers to say more

  • “That’s interesting” - shows interest

  • “I see” - shows you understand what the person said

  • “Uh-huh” - shows agreements, often used to encourage the speaker to continue

  • “Wow” - shows surprise, amazement, especially to something unexpected or impressive 

Responding Phrases (from Weekends Section 5)

  • I think you had a (great / terrible / crazy) (weekend / morning / day / time / experience etc)

  • You had a (great / terrible / crazy) (weekend / morning / day / time / experience etc), didn’t you?

  • It sounds like you had a (great / terrible / crazy) (weekend / morning / day / time / experience etc)

Homework: try to think of ways you can respond to the sentences you wrote.
