  • Beat / beat / beaten (verb) defeat (someone) in a game or other competitive situation

    • I think he will beat him at the next tournament.

    • She beat him easily at chess.

    • My favourite team was beaten.

  • Promote (verb) / promotion (noun)

    • If he wins, he will get a promotion.

    • … he will be promoted.

  • Demote (verb) / demotion (noun)

    • If he loses, he will get a demotion

      • … he will be demoted.

  • I’ve heard he has a lot of fans.

  • 判官贔屓; Root for the underdog

    • Underdog; a competitor thought to have little chance of winning a fight or contest

  • Do you feel the electricity price is going up?

    • Do you feel the price of electricity is going up?

  • Old houses had a sunken floor in the living room.

    • We have a small sunken garden outside in the backyard.

  • Young people don’t know how to dial a rotary phone.
