Topic: At the coffee shop

Lesson Notes January 10, 2023 (Elementary)

  • My son-in-law and my husband went to end of year parties. (= they each went to a end of year party)

    • I helped my daughter bathe her daughter.

  • I had to work almost every day this week. (NOT all day this week)

    • We sell new (year’s) calendars to our customers.

    • We sell two types of calendars, a desk calendar and a wall calendar.

    • Most race horses retire after a few years. (NOT most horses of racing)

  • How crowded was Meiji shrine on January 2nd?

    • Was Meiji shrine crowded?

    • I waited about thirty minutes in line.

    • Meiji shrine has several large donation boxes for New Year’s.

  • -cide; a person or thing that kills; herbicide, insecticide, suicide etc

  • My granddaughter is a toddler, she’s just learning how to walk.

At the coffee shop

  • Staff to customer; these are used to sound friendly, you can give short answers.

    • How are you?

      • How are you doing today?

    • Windy today, isn’t it? (Commenting on weather)

  • Customer to staff

    • What comes on the burger? (for sandwiches, hamburgers etc)

    • If you don’t want something on a sandwich, burger etc you can say

      • No pickles.

      • No mustard.

      • Hold the pickles.

      • Hold the mustard.

Homework: Review lesson, think of a time you had to tip at a restaurant, or think of a time you’ve seen it on TV or in a movie
