  • My son came back for New Year’s. (= the days / period of time immediately before and after 31 December)

    • We had a nice dinner on New Year’s Eve. (December 31st)

    • My friends and I had a bbq on New Year’s Day. (January 1st)

  • My younger son and his family live upstairs. (NOT younger son and family)

  • Claw; (countable noun) used for birds, lizards, insects, crabs, lobsters, scorpions etc

  • Chill; (verb) cool (food or drink), typically in a refrigerator

    • After cooking, shape it, then chill it in the fridge for two hours.

    • It can lose its shape if it’s not chilled long enough.

  • Don’t confuse these pronunciations

    • Croquet ( kroh-key )

    • Croquette ( kroh-ket )

  • There were three croquettes for each person.

  • The governor of Miyazaki should have known better. He shouldn’t have gone to the shrines.

  • A lot of people were lined up to pray at the shrine.

    • There was a long line of people at the shrine.

  • My two grandsons will go to daycare. (= I have two grandsons, they will go to daycare)

    • Two of my grandsons will go to daycare. (= I have more than two grandsons, but only two will go to daycare.)

  • I will try to drive to the supermarket when I visiting my daughter in America. (NOT I will try to drive a car)

  • Differences between see and meet

    • Use meet for the first time you see someone

      • I met a interesting woman at the party last night. We often go to the same parties, but this was the first time we met.

    • Use meet when you are seeing someone because you have plans or an appointment (formally)

      • Are you meeting with the bank staff later today?

      • We met with my son’s teacher about his grades.

    • We also use meet when we accidentally run into a friend or acquaintance.

      • While I was out shopping I (met / ran into) my friend and ended up going for a coffee.

    • Use see for all other situations; especially for friends, family, and other people you know

      • I see my family once every couple of years.

      • When’s the last time you saw your uncle?
