Words & Phrases

  • She can’t make it to the class.

    • She can’t make it back for the class.

  • I was given some bath salts.

  • Brackish mean water that is a mix of freshwater and saltwater.

    • It’s not as salty as seawater but saltier than freshwater.

  • I saw a program that talked about items left behind by travellers leaving Japan.

    • I was surprised by how many suitcases are left behind.

    • Have you (accidentally / purposely) left something behind?

  • I lost my house key. I backtracked to find it, but I couldn’t find it. I asked the station staff, luckily someone turned it in.

  • I’ve used my MyNumber Card to get a residence certificate.

  • I had to visit the orthopedist for my tennis elbow.

    • The doctor used infrared therapy for my elbow.

Appropriate Language

  • Weight

    • Muscle mass; amount of muscle tissue in the body

    • Fat mass; weight made up of fat tissue, including essential and stored fat

    • Bone mass; the weight of bones you have in your body

  • Lean (body) mass; the weight of everything in your body except fat.
