Words & Phrases

  • He said he might have a slipped disc.

    • The doctor said there were no problems on the X-ray.

    • My husband complained of pain and numbness in his back.

  • The strawberries were sweet, but the cake wasn’t sugary.

  • The tour we went on has been used for movies and TV shows. (NOT movies and dramas)

    • ‘Drama’ is one type of movie or tv show

  • We could see a pod of whales. (= a group of whales travelling / living together)

    • ‘Pod’; is used for a group of marine mammals

  • The food was ok, but it was expensive. (= good, but not bad nor great)

    • I’m afraid of next month’s credit card (bill / statement).

  • My daughter-in-law’s mom wanted to visit a Snoopy Surf Shop.

  • It was a Hawaiian style wedding, they still exchanged rings and wedding vows.

  • Did you eat ice cream on your trip? I remember there were many different flavours.

    • What flavour of ice cream did you eat? (= the specific kind you ate)

    • How does your ice cream taste? (= this asks about quality; “it’s delicious”, “it tastes great”, “it wasn’t very good))
