Topic: On Holiday

Lesson Notes August 8, 2023 (Elementary)

  • (Express way / Highway / Route) two-four-six

  • Backroads; (driving in the countryside) not the main highway or routes

  • Side streets; (in a city) not the main streets

  • My brother-in-law said we shouldn’t come.

  • A: Is there air conditioner in the horse stables?
    B: They have misters and electric fans.

  • Stumble; (verb) walk uneasy or lightly fall; especially after drinking a lot

    • My friend stumbled home.

    • I stumbled walking down the stairs with a heavy package.

On Holiday

  • We can use “at”, but not “at the” with place names, cities names etc

    • At Izu I visited a restaurant. (NOT at the Izu)

  • We can use “at the” with a regular noun

    • At the Izu train station I met a nice lady.

  • When I got in the pool. (= when I entered)

  • When I got to the pool side. (= when I arrived)

  • He told me about a great place to go on _____

    • A trip / a holiday / a break / a day-off / a holiday / a vacation / a week-off

  • In conversation when someone asks you an opinion question, it’s often polite to ask them “what about you?” Or “how about you?”
    A: Do you prefer to have holidays at the beach or in the mountains?
    B: I think I like holidays at the beach best.
    A: Why?
    B: I like to watch sunsets. How about you?
    A: I like in the mountains, I like the flowers.
