Lesson Notes August 29, 2023 (Elementary)

  • I have a portable solar panel, it is two metres by eighty centimetres.

  • I use my portable battery to charge my electronic devices.

  • I can use the solar panel and battery in an emergency.

  • There is not a direct one-to-one translation in English for “先輩”; our choice of word or phrase will depend on the context and relationship within your workplace or group

    • We can say (senior / junior) co-worker; this works when someone is more experienced or higher-ranking

    • We can use “experienced colleague” or “mentor” in work situations, when someone is teaching or showing a junior colleague about the company.

    • In a volunteer setting we might use “veteran” or “experienced member

  • My older granddaughter wanted to talk to me, but I can’t understand her unless my son translates for me.

  • We made a lotion that is good for sensitive skin.

    • The lotion is also good to make your hair silky. (= soft, fine, lustrous (shiny))

  • We used a pressure cooker to help extract the essence from the cocoon ( kuh-KOON ).

  • Manure; animals droppings used as fertilizer
