Topic: On Holiday

Lesson Notes August 22, 2023 (Elementary)

  • Did everyone enjoy their Oban holidays?

  • My son (said / told me) that he was moving to California.

  • A: My son is getting married, at last it suddenly happened.
    B: How did they meet?
    A: His friend introduced them.

  • I was planning to visit my son’s new house. (NOT my new son’s house)

    • I don’t like hot weather, when it cools down I want to visit his house.

  • My son caught covid, he had only a cough.

  • Linger (verb) / Lingering (adj); lasting for a long time or slow to end

    • He has a lingering cough.

    • The heat has been lingering all summer.

  • On the typhoon day there was no wind and no rain. We were amazed.

  • A: My golf score was bad.
    B: How bad? (= How bad was your score?)
    A: It was bad, really bad. //  A: My score was 119.

On Holiday

  • I lost my way to the hotel. (= I got lost on the way to the hotel)

  • I thought my son was following me, but he wasn’t behind me.

  • My passport was stolen. (NOT I was stolen my passport)

  • My host (dad / father) was a little crazy.

  • People celebrate Christmas on December 25th. (= on the 25th of December)

  • We say “on Monday” and “in the morning”, but we say “on Monday morning

  • Similar, we say “at night” but we use “in the middle of the night

  • For holidays longer than one day, we use “at”, like “at Christmas”, “at Golden Week”, but when we talk about specific holidays we use “on Christmas Day”, “on Children’s Day
