Words & Phrases

  • Friday night’s earthquake level was around 4.

    • The level of Friday night’s earthquake felt higher than 4.

    • I felt it was big.

  • What did you do when you heard the emergency alert?

    • The alerts from some 200 cellphones at the beer garden were noisy.

  • Do you have an emergency (backpack / knapsack / rucksack)?

    • I keep a go-bag in my closet in case of emergencies. (Go-bag; (noun) a bag packed with essentials for emergency evacuation)

  • Tuna cans are easy to open during emergencies.

    • Canned tuna is packed with nutrition.

  • Cat grass is a type of grass specifically grown for cats to eat.

  • My neighbour’s cat was wearing a pink collar.

    • This cat also uses my flower bed as a litter box.

  • Soda (noun); a carbonated soft drink; in Canada we often say “pop”

    • The shop put a small sprig of rosemary in their soda. It was refreshing. (= a small stem of an herb)

    • I’m going to the corner store, do you want a pop?

  • My husband has a sweet tooth. He often buys different sweet for teatime. (Sweet tooth (noun); a great liking for sweet-tasting foods)

  • For a lot of teas I feel the best-before-date is too short.
