Words & Phrases

  • I went out in the afternoon and had coffee and cake.

  • Blackboard (noun)

    • A blackboard is a dark, flat board (usually black or green).

    • Teachers use it to write with chalk.

    • You often see blackboards in older classrooms.

    • The teacher wrote the date on the blackboard with white chalk.

  • Whiteboard (noun)

    • A whiteboard is a shiny white board.

    • People write on it with markers (not chalk).

    • It is common in modern classrooms and offices.

    • Our teacher drew a map on the whiteboard with a blue marker.

  • Shush (verb); To tell someone to be quiet / (Interjection); A sound or word used to ask for silence

    • She shushed the children during the movie. (verb)

    • Shush! I’m trying to hear what they’re saying on the news. (interjection)

    • The librarian shushed the students who were talking loudly. (verb)

    • “The librarian is coming, shush!” whispered the boy. (interjection)

  • “There were some young cherry trees, but I expected more older trees.”

    • “There were only young cherry trees—I thought there would be mature ones.”

    • “I was hoping to see older cherry trees, but they were all quite young.”

  • Does anyone know the theme for the upcoming Expo?

  • Dozen (noun); A group or set of twelve items.

    • I bought a dozen eggs from the store.

    • She received a dozen roses for her birthday.

    • There were a dozen students in the small class.

    • “Only a half dozen students showed up for class.” (= only six students)

  • The Uniqlo in OPA closed and reopened in Ito Yokado.

  • The quality of Uniqlo’s goods is improving.

    • The quality of Uniqlo’s goods is going up.

  • Some of Uniqlo’s underwear, like t-shirts, are not durable.

    • Durable (adj); Able to withstand wear, pressure, or damage; long-lasting

    • The durable fabric of the backpack lasted for years.

    • This durable phone case can withstand drops and scratches.

    • The company sells durable tools that are made to last.

  • Lacoste is a French clothing brand known for its polo shirts, founded by tennis player René Lacoste. The brand’s logo is a crocodile.

Grammar

  • We don’t usually use “recommend someone to do something”. Instead, we use:

    • recommend + that + subject + verb (e.g. I recommend that you see a doctor.)

      • “I never recommend that you go to that garden.”

    • recommend + verb-ing (e.g. I recommend seeing a doctor.)

      • “I never recommend going to that garden.”
