Grammar

It’s common to use “have” (or “had” in the past tense) when talking about receiving or arranging for a service like cleaning, repair, or treatment.

  • “I had my hair cut yesterday.”

    • This means you went to a hairdresser and they cut your hair. You didn’t do it yourself, so “had” shows that you received the service.

  • “She is having her car repaired today.”

    • This means she took her car to a mechanic, and they are fixing it. “Having” is used to show that she arranged for someone else to do the repair.

  • “We had the house cleaned last week.”

    • This means you hired someone to clean the house, and they did the cleaning for you. “Had” shows that you received the service of cleaning.
