  • Did you (know / hear) about the accident on the Odakyu line this morning?

  • A: I think I want to join a gym.
    B: What would you like to do at the gym? (NOT what do you do at the gym; we need to use “would” for the hypothetical situation)

    • A: I joined a gym last month.
      B: What do you do at the gym?

  • Do you know who the candidates are for the local mayoral election?

  • We need to find several candidates for the new position in the company.

  • The news is reporting that the flu and covid are going around recently.

  • My friend had trhe (vaccination / shot) for shingles.

    • How many times have you been vaccinated for covid-19. (NOT how many times have you been shot for covid-19. Using “shot” in this way does not work)

  • I got a new credit card, I had to update my gym and other services. (NOT register)

  • In the past while I’ve gotten around thirty-five scam emails and message that look like my bank. (NOT from my bank)

Vocabulary

  • Candidate; (noun) a person who applies for a job or is nominated for election

  • Be going around; (phrase) to be spreading

  • Shingles; (medical name; herpes zoster) a painful acute inflammation on the skin. It is caused by the same virus as chickenpox.

  • Vaccination; (synonym) “(have / get) a shot”

  • Bank book; also called “passbook” or “account book”; this shows a record of deposits and withdrawals for a bank account
