Words & Phrases

  • I checked their website, they suggest that if you have back pain not to go horseback riding.

  • I tripped and fell while I was out, I think my foot caught on a lip. (= on an edge / on a rim)

  • My knees were bleeding and bruised. (NOT bruising)

  • I’m surprised (by / with) the power of Instagram.

  • I turned (up / down) the lights. (= to make the lights brighter or darker)

    • I turned the lights (up / down).

Appropriate Language

What vs How

  • What’s the temperature in Tokyo?

    • This is asking for the specific temperature in degrees; “It’s 20 degrees.”

  • What did you do last weekend?

    • This is a direct question for specific activities; “I went hiking.”

  • How’s the temperature in Tokyo?

    • This asks more about the feel of the temperature; “It’s warm.” / “It’s chilly.”

  • How was your weekend?

    • This asks more about the overall experience or feeling of the weekend; “It was great.” / “It was terrible.”

  • 6 Drain

    • Drain the rice

    • Drain the pasta

    • Drain the carrots

  • 8 Bake

    • Bake a loaf of bread (= bake bread)

    • Bake cookies (= usually plural)

    • Bake a cake (= usually singular)

  • Section 3 - Match the rhyming words, and then add one or two more words which you think rhyme
