Words & Phrases

  • The vet recommends that indoor cats get vaccinated against three diseases. However, an outdoor cat should receive vaccinations against five diseases.

    • Vet’ is the short form for ‘veterinarian’

  • Did you watch the final game of the World Series?

    • I saw the first innings and the last innings.

    • I caught the highlights afterwards on the news.

    • The Dodgers won seven to six (against the Yankees.

    • The Dodgers won the series four games to one.

    • The Yankees lost the series four games to one.

  • Seven baby koi were born this year.(NOT seven baby kois)

  • Bears and koi both (hibernate / sleep) during winter.

  • You can make a citrus spray to keep cats out of your garden.

  • I want to (be / feel) excited about travelling to India next February, but I’m worried about my elderly mother.

Grammar

  • One koi or many koi (without adding an "s" for the plural).

    • This usage follows a similar pattern to words like “deer”, “moose”,  "sheep," which also stay the same in both singular and plural forms.

    • “Fish” is often used with the same pattern, although fishes can be used when referring to multiple species.
