Words & Phrases

  • Last year, he was studying to be a paramedic.

    • This year, he became a paramedic.

  • It’s going to be stormy and windy overnight.

  • My husband wakes up around five o’clock. That’s too early for me.

  • We usually have breakfast around seven in the morning. (See now below)

    • My daughter has a bowl of cereal every morning before going to work.

  • My neighbourhood is a bit dark, there are few streetlights.

  • I usually wait at home for my daughter to call me, if she needs to be picked up.

    • I usually wait for my daughter to phone me, in case she needs a ride.

  • I don’t want to spatter fish oil all over my newly renovated kitchen.

    • He stared at the rain spattering on the glass.

    • Be careful not to splatter pasta sauce on your white shirt.

  • The moment when his face changed, just before the match, impressed the crowd. (NOT he changed his face)

  • At a recent sumo tournament people complained that the spectators behaved poorly.

  • After he retired from sumo, he became a stable-master. (NOT master of a stable)

  • Sumo wrestlers tend to have a short lifespan, due to intense physical activity, obesity and chronic injuries.

Appropriate Language

  • Public servant; is a person who is elected to appointed to a public office, often working for a local or state government.

  • ‘Take breakfast’ is more formal or traditional, but it is less frequent in everyday conversation.

  • Spatter / Splatter (verb); drops of a liquid falls on an area of a surface

  • Spectator vs Audience

    • Audience; people at a public event such as a play, film, concert or meeting

    • Spectator; people who watch at a show, game or other event

  • Master of a stable; (historically) typically is used in contexts involving animals, particularly horses

    • Modern times “stable manager” or “head groom” would be used

  • Bulimia (nervosa); an illness in which a person has a very great fear of booming fat, and so they make themselves vomit after eating
