Words & Phrases

  • Her husband slipped a disc just before going on holiday.

  • She scratches at the balcony door to let us know she wants out or in.

  • The sunshine wasn’t very strong, but the lady beside me complained about getting a tan. After a short time, she stood up and went somewhere else.

  • I enjoyed watching the final day of the sumo tournament.

  • Which sumo wrestler do you cheer for?

  • I know you’re upset, but try to cheer up!

  • The author autographed his new book for me.

    • One of his books has been made into a movie and will premier soon.

    • I’m going to go to the book store and flip through his books.

  • Yesterday, was my first morning shift. So far, I had only worked afternoon shifts.

Appropriate Language

  • Cheer up; (phrasal verb) to make someone feel happier or to become happier

  • Cheer for; to support or encourage someone, usually in a competitive sport or performance

Work Words

  • Partner; a person you are married to or in a romantic relationship; this term is gaining popularly as it sounds more equal than saying “husband” or “wife”

  • Industry advisor on recycling; helps brands recycle materials and reduce waste. They give advice on house to reuse clothes and make productions more eco-friendly.

  • Vocation; a type of work of job that you feel is right for you, often involves helping other people
