Lesson Notes May 2, 2023 (Vocabulary Building)

  • Wedding ceremony; a formal event that celebrates the union of two people in marriage

  • Wedding reception; a celebration that takes place after the wedding ceremony;  the newly married couple and their guests to come together to eat, drink, dance, and socialize

  • Wedding party; typically refers to the group of people who participate in a wedding ceremony alongside the bride and groom

    • My daughter had a party after her wedding with her friends. (NOT had a wedding party)

  • Alterations; taking an item to a professional tailor or seamstress for the specific purpose of having it altered to fit better or be restyled.

    • "I need to take this shirt to the tailor for alterations. It's too loose in the sleeves.”

    • "She altered her dress by shortening the hemline and adding some lace trim.”

    • "The tailor performed some alterations on my suit jacket to make it fit better.”

  • I’m afraid the roads will be very crowded this Golden Week. If we drive we might get stuck in traffic.

  • The new sushi shop that just open has at least 50 booths.

    • The farmer’s market had some delicious vegetable booths.

    • Will there be any food and drink booths at the festival this coming weekend?

    • We can buy tickets at the ticket booth, or we can buy online.

  • The loading screen is spinning. (= a graphic or animation that is displayed while the device is in the process of loading or launching an application, website, or other content)

    • The loading screen is stuck. (=  the animation or graphic is not progressing or changing, indicating that the loading process is not progressing)

  • The internet in my building was (broken / down) the other day.

    • Earlier today my router wasn’t working.

  • App; short form of application (NOT appli)

    • How many apps do you have on your iPad?

    • I have a little over 100 applications on my phone.

  • My internet is very slow during long holidays.
