Words & Phrases

  • The hospital didn’t have a doctor on call for bone injuries.

    • ‘On call’ means available to work or respond to emergencies, even outside regular hours.

    • The doctor was on call all night to help any patients who needed urgent care.

    • I am on call this weekend, so I may need to work if there’s an emergency.

    • The IT team is always on call in case the system has any issues.

  • My son twisted his ankle and was on crutches for a week.

  • A friend of mine stumbled on the street. She saw a doctor who said her bone was broken.

    • She lives in a three-storey house, but now she plans to move to a single-floor apartment.

    • A lot of homes in Canada are single-storey, with a basement.

  • When you sit down to (dinner / supper) what do you talk about?

    • We talk about our volunteer activities at dinner time.

  • To travel to some countries you need (your shots / vaccinations).
