  • Some nuclear scientists became outspoken critics of nuclear proliferation and worked to promote international cooperation to prevent the use and spread of nuclear weapons.

  • Do you like to watch animated films?

    • I believe it won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

  • Cartoons are seen as being for children, usually watched on Saturday mornings.

    • There are animated movies and shows, which can be for kids or adults. Often these are not called cartoons.

  • I’ve read some graphic novels that were written for adults, definitely not for children.

    • I bought a series of four compendiums of a comic I enjoy, each one weights around two kilograms.

  • She applied to major in History, but she wasn’t accepted. So she chose another major.

  • She’s a powerful actress. (NOT powerful player)

    • She plays interesting roles. (= She acts in interesting roles.)

Vocabulary

  • CGI; Computer Generated Imagery; special visual effects created using computer software

  • Digital effects; similar to CGI but uses a wider range of techniques used to enhance or alter visual elements in a scene

  • Manga; a style of Japanese comic books and graphic novels, typically aimed at adults as well as children

  • Comic books; a magazine that presents a serialized story featuring the adventures of a superhero, or other characters

  • Compendium; (of comics, graphic novels, manga) a collection of published issues, gathered together into one volume or set
