Topic: The Senses

Lesson Notes June 6, 2023 (Vocabulary Building)

  • I got a call during my last lesson, so I called her back between lessons.

  • Many people were standing inside the station waiting for the rain to let up. (= waiting for the rain to lessen or weaken)

  • Dust jacket; (noun) a removable paper cover, generally with a decorative design, used to protect a book from dirt or damage

    • Dust jacket (cover / protector); (noun) a clear plastic cover over a dust jacket

  • The parking lot at my job was like a lake last Friday. I had to walk through several puddles, my sneakers were (soaking wet / drench).

  • Rubber boots; a knee-length waterproof rubber or plastic boot; also called rain boots, waterproof boots

    • I haven’t had rubber boots since I was in early elementary school, nowadays I have waterproof shoes.

    • I’ve heard taking off rubber boots is too difficult especially if water gets inside them.

  • She and I spent time together. (It is customary to place the other person's name or pronoun first, followed by "and" and then your own name or pronoun.)

The Senses

  • Sensitive hearing; having a good sense of hearing

  • My grandfather lost his hearing in one ear years ago.

    • Year by year I am gradually losing my hearing.

  • I really like seeing green leaves.

    • I really like the sight of green leaves.

  • I absolutely hate the texture of octopus, it’s like a pink eraser  from elementary school.

Homework; The Senses; section 2, play the video and pay attention to the object or what the person (the man / the women) is doing. Then write one sentence for each clip using one of the sense verbs.
