Lesson Notes June 11, 2024 (TUESDAY ZOOM)

  • It’s so hot today. I am using the (air conditioner / AC). (NOT cooler)

  • I was watching TV and fell asleep for a while.

  • I checked my husband’s art that he is still making. The body proportions were off, so I corrected it.

  • I lost track of time.

    • I went shopping with my mother. I was looking at some clothes and when I turned around, she was gone. I lost track of my mother. (= no longer aware of your mother's whereabouts while shopping)

    • I lent some books to a few friends. After several months I lost track of my books. (= no longer knew the location of your books or who had them)

    • On Sunday, I lost track of the day while I was gardening. (= unaware of the passage of time or forgot it was Sunday)

  • Don’t you fall asleep when you watch Netflix?

  • I visited Tachikawa for the first time in a while. (NOT in a long absence)

    • I went to Tachikawa after a long time.

  • We got together at a restaurant inside the station building. (NOT We got together in the station building at a restaurant.)

  • Sekisui House said it decided to (take down / demolish) a 10-story, 18-unit condominium in Kunitachi.

    • This is a (total) waste.

    • A few years ago, there was a dispute over this construction.

    • Cases like these are few and far between. (NOT This case is few and far between)

  • There was a case a while back where a woman severed a man's head.

    • It was a bizarre murder.

  • I was wearing a mask at the hospital, but a woman a couple seats over coughed hard.

  • Has anyone had the vaccination for shingles?

  • I got stir-crazy being stuck at home in bed for two weeks.

Vocabulary

  • Cooler; (noun) a container for keeping food or bottles cool

  • Lose track of (time); fail to stay fully aware of or informed about (the time)

  • Dispute; (noun) a disagreement or argument

  • Few and far between; used to describe something that is rare or uncommon, and it is typically used with plural subjects

  • Sever; (verb) cut off or separate completely, typically with a sharp instrument

  • Bizarre; (adj) very strange or unusual

  • “Shingles” is the common term for herpes zoster

  • Stir-crazy; (adj) feeling very bored, frustrated, or unhappy because you have been inside for too long and want to go outside or do something different
