Words & Phrases

  • “Feel like doing something” / “Feel like something; want to do something

    • I don’t feel like doing anything in this heat.

    • We felt like eating yakitori, so we went out for dinner.

      • We felt like yakitori.

    • I feel like celebrating my birthday this year.

  • I tried an electronic neck cooler, it worked pretty well.

  • Lukewarm; (of liquid or food that should be hot) not warm enough

    • My coffee is lukewarm, I forgot to drink it.

    • Can you heat up this soup, it’s not hot enough. It’s somewhat lukewarm.

  • The polls have closed and the results are in, Yuriko Koike ha once again won Governor of Tokyo.

    • Shinji Ishimaru came in second.

    • The other candidate didn’t say anything about her own policies.

    • She didn’t have concrete policies and was light on details.

  • Stump speech; a speech repeatedly delivered by a politician during their campaign

    • Stump speeches in Japan are often delivered from a van, and often not by the candidate.

  • Frontrunner; the contestant that is leading in a race or other competition

    • The media only focused on the four frontrunner candidates

  • I sometimes sense a (smoke / burning) smell. (= smell)

Appropriacy

  • Circumstance; a fact or detail that is part of an event or situation.

    • Under normal circumstances, I go to bed at 10 PM.

    • Due to unforeseen circumstances, the concert was canceled.

  • Situation; a set of conditions at a certain time and place.

    • The situation at the park was very calm and peaceful.

    • She found herself in a difficult situation when her car broke down.

  • Condition; the state something or someone is in.

    • The bike is in good condition and works perfectly.

    • Due to his medical condition, he needs to take medicine every day.
