Lesson Notes July 4, 2023 (Vocabulary Building)

  • The hiking course around Kamakura has less people.

    • The hiking course around Kamakura is less crowded.

  • My father moved around a lot, so I didn’t really have a hometown, but every summer we stayed with our grandfather.

  • A: How many Indiana Jones movies are there? (NOT how many series are there)
    B: The fifth movie was released recently. It’s rumoured to be the last with Harrison Ford. (= there are five Indiana Jones movies)

    • I recommend it to you. (NOT I recommend you)

Television

  • Remember to use “plural” form for a general meaning in your questions and answers

    • How often do you watch (soap operas / documentaries / dramas / reality shows / the news etc)? (We always say “the news” and “sports”)

    • I often watch them.

    • How often do you watch (baseball / ruby / football etc)? (We do not use a plural with specific sports)

  • Streaming (shows like Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime)

    • Change (the show / the programme)

  • Browse (to look at)

    • (Internet) I browse dinner recipes.

    • (Shopping) I was browsing new shoes the other day.
