Words & Phrases

  • I went to the dentist this morning, since it opens at 9 o’clock.

  • My back tooth was bad, so the dentist said it should be pulled out.

  • The time differences makes it difficult to watch the games live. (NOT on live)

  • The Opening Ceremony (will / is going to) be held this evening.

    • For the first time in history, the event’s Opening Ceremony will not be held inside a stadium.

  • Several bats were found in my attic.

    • A contractor got rid of them.

    • The bats had a wingspan of about 15cm.

    • The bats (came / crawled) through some gaps around the roof.

  • I never noticed the bats because I close the shutters around dinner time.

  • My mother’s pond has five koi. (Koi; singular and plural)

  • I saw several carp in the river. (Carp; singular and plural)

  • The pond is two metres wide and forty centimetres deep.

    • The pond’s width is about two metres, and the depth is forty centimetres.

Pronunciation

  • Attic ( ˈatɪk ) AT-tic

  • Shutter ( ˈʃʌtə ) SHUT-ter

  • Herb; has slightly different pronunciations

    • North American, the “h” is silent: ( ɝːb )

    • British: ( hɜːb )

Appropriacy

For businesses, shops and offices, we use open and close typically not start. We use start for personal schedules or class times.

  • The dentist office opens early in the morning.

  • The supermarket closes at 10pm.

  • My office building opens at 6am, but I start work at 8am.

  • The elementary school isn’t open on weekends.

  • In elementary school, kids start class at 9am.

Note the difference between Fry (a young fish) and Baby

  • I saw some koi fry in my pond.

  • I saw some baby koi in my pond.
