Words & Phrases

  • I had a cramp in my left foot.

    • I had a muscle spasm in my left foot.

  • I grow some plants in the ground.

    • I grow some plants in pots on the ground. (= the pots are sitting on the ground)

  • I had to double pot my mini bonsai. (= to put a pot inside a pot)

  • Do those snacks taste like tom yum?

    • Are those snack tom yum flavoured?

  • Harissa is like a chilli pepper paste.

  • Monday is a National Holiday, so this weekend is a long weekend. (= a weekend plus a national holiday)

  • Cemetery; a large burial ground. Sometimes also called a graveyard

  • Grave; a place in a burial ground where someone is buried or interred

  • When I’m working out in the garden I always have two mosquito coils burning.

    • I prefer to use a bug spray to keep mosquitoes away.

    • Excuse me, does your store have any insect repellents?

  • If your skin is sensitive you should use a weak insect repellent. (NOT skin is weak)

Grammar

In English, when using "home" as an adverb to indicate movement towards one's residence or destination, we typically do not use "to" before "home."

  • On my way home. (NOT way to home)

  • She went home after work.

  • We drove home after going to the market.

  • How often does he walk home?

When using “home” as a noun we can use “to”

  • I am going to my friend's home.

  • She invited us to her home for dinner.

  • He drove straight to his new home.

  • How often does he walk to your home?

  • There are many famous people resting in Aoyama Cemetery. (NOT sleeping in)
