Words & Phrases

  • Have you fully recovered?

    • I’ve mostly gotten over my dizziness.

  • I didn’t feel much pain because I took a painkiller everyday.

  • I had a severe pain in my back from a kidney stone.

    • I took medicine that made it easier to pass the stone.

    • I had excruciating pain from a kidney stone.

  • Were the shrines crowded with people?

    • There were long lines of people.

    • Many people were standing in line to pray at New Year’s.

  • I stayed at my second home in Nagano. I did nothing for five days.

    • It’s near the city of Chino.

    • My sister is from the town of Hakone.

  • I prepared New Year’s gifts for all my grandchildren.

  • There are a lot of trinkets collecting dust in my house.

Appropriate Language

  • In my back; use this to refer to pain that is felt inside or within the area of your back

    • On my back; use this to refer to something physically on the surface of your back, such as a rash or bruise

  • Excruciating; extremely painful and very intense physical pain

  • Stand in line; use this to describe people waiting in an orderly fashion

  • Collect dust; used to say that items are not being used or are being neglected
