  • I didn’t feel the earthquake, but I noticed the ceiling light was swinging a little.

  • The aftershocks were scary. (NOT were scared)

    • I was scared of the aftershocks. (NOT was scary)

    • Many of the roads are cracked.

  • If Mt. Fuji erupts, it will jeopardize the Japanese economy.

  • A huge earthquake (happened / occurred / hit) on New Year’s Day.

    • A large snowstorm is expected to hit us later this week.

  • War has broken out across the globe.

    • Last year in Canada, many wildfires broke out.

    • I am feeling so stressed that I am breaking out in hives and a rash.

  • There is a special room with a dragon painted on the ceiling; only one person can go in at a time. If you clap your hands, you can hear the cry of the dragon.

  • It’s my tradition to visit three shrines or temples at New Year’s. (NOT my custom)

Vocabulary

  • Swing; (verb) move back and forth or from side to side, while suspended (hanging)

  • Sway; (verb) move back and forth, or from side to side

  • Nightmare; (noun) a frightening or unpleasant dream

  • Dream; (noun) a series of thoughts, images, and sensations; you can have “good dreams” and “bad dreams”

  • Jeopardize; (verb) put (someone or something) into a situation in which there is a danger of loss, harm, or failure

  • Break out; (verb) (of war, fighting, or similarly undesirable things) start suddenly

    • We often use “hit” for natural disasters like earthquakes, typhoons, storms etc

  • Cry; (noun) suggesting a specific noise that an animal makes
