Lesson Notes January 14, 2025 (Vocabulary Building)

Words & Phrases

  • The shingles spots are still on my leg, the colour is fading.

    • Are shingles itchy and painful?

    • The doctor used a swab to take a sample for the shingles test.

    • The nurse swabbed the inside my cheek to test for illness.

  • The male doctor was busy, so I saw the female one instead.

  • Has anyone around you gotten (influenza / the flu)?

    • He was tested and found out he had the flu. (NOT got the flu)

  • When is your (performance / show)? (NOT your stage)

    • Will you have a rehearsal at the venue before your performance?

  • A young man fell down. He was conscious and alert, but he couldn’t move.

  • The students enjoyed (baking / cooking / making) the pizza. (NOT burning)

Pronunciation

  • Batter (noun) ( ˈbæt.ər ) BAT-ter

  • Butter (noun) ( ˈbʌt.ər ) BUT-ter

  • Inexperienced (adj) ( ˌɪn.ɪkˈspɪə.ri.ənst ) in-ex-PE-ri-enced

Appropriate Language

  • In casual speech, “the flu” is more commonly used than “influenza”.

  • “Stage” is the raised platform or area where performances, presentations or shows take place. Typically found in theatres, concert halls, or other performances spaces.

  • “Alert” means being attentive and aware of surroundings or events

  • “Burn” means to cook food at too high a temperature or for too long, cause it to become blackened, overcooked, or ruined

  • “Dough” is thicker and more solid for breads, pizzas, or cookies. “Batter” is thinner and pourable like cakes, pancakes, or muffins.

Homework

Write one or two sentences for each of the bold expressions in Section 6. Try not to use a dictionary or the internet. Use the words you already know and the definitions from that section.
