Words & Phrases

  • Today was the coldest morning, don’t you think? (NOT the most cold)

  • Do you know who typed that strange message in the group?

  • I can’t attend the lessons next week. (NOT I won’t attend)

  • There were a lot of difficulties in building the Panama Canal back in the late 1800s. (= eighteen-hundreds)

  • Some Japanese feel that the country is not listened to on the world stage.

  • Will there be good chemistry between the Prime Minister and the President?

    • After the argument, the two friends had bad chemistry for years.

Pronunciation

  • Won’t (contraction: will not) ( woʊnt ) WON’T

  • Want ( verb / noun) ( wɔnt / wɑnt ) WANT

Appropriate Language

  • Today was the coldest morning, right? (More casual)

    • I think today was the coldest morning, don’t you? (A little smoother)

  • I can’t make it to the lessons next week. (Casual and common)

    • I won’t be able to attend the lessons next week. (A bit more formal)

    • I’m not able to attend the lessons next week. (Clear and natural)

  • The Japanese phrase ‘かわいい子には旅をさせよ’ can be translated as ‘Kids should go out and experience the world for themselves.’ It means that it’s important for children to face challenges and learn from their own experiences to grow.

    • “Kids need to experience the world on their own.”
