Words & Phrases

  • Today is warm, but next next will be cold again.

  • Did you (have / get) a haircut? (= noun)

    • Did you (have / get) your hair cut? (= verb phrase)

  • That church can seat about 600 people.

  • They sat in the front pew during the wedding ceremony.

    • “A pew” is a long bench with a back, usually found in churches for people to sit on during services.

  • Typically, churches have priests, and cathedrals have bishops.

  • The concert was less than two hours.

    • “The concert lasted less than two hours.”

    • “The concert was under two hours long.”

  • A man from the construction company that built my house came to do the second inspection.

    • There is a small problem with a door, so he will (send / have) someone come to my house to fix it.

    • There is an issue with some wallpaper that needs to be fixed.

  • I think there’s a draft coming from my living room window. I can feel a small breeze near it.

    • “A draft” is a current of air, often cold, flowing through an open window or door.

  • It’s an old city, but several new condominiums and commercial skyscrapers are being built.

    • “A skyscraper” generally refers to a tall, multi-story building, typically for office or commercial use

    • “A condominium” (or condo) is a type of residential property
