Lesson Plan February 24, 2023

Topic: Not & No

In this lesson we will be looking at how we use not anybody / anyone / anything and nobody, no-one, and nothing in a variety of sentences and answers.

Section A

We use not + (anybody / anyone) and nobody / no-one for people

  • There isn’t (anybody / anyone) in the room.

  • There is (nobody / no-one) in the room.

  • A: Is there anyone in the room?
    B: There’s (nobody / no-one).

Note: -body and -one are the same: anybody = anyone and nobody = no-one

We use not + anything and nothing for things.

  • There isn’t anything in the bag.

  • There is nothing in the bag.

  • A: Is there anything in the bag?
    B: No, there’s nothing.

Section B

Not + (anybody / anyone)

  • I don’t know anybody here.

    • I don’t know anyone here.

Nobody = not + anybody

No-one = not + anyone

  • I’m lonely. I have nobody to talk to. (= I don’t have anybody to talk to)

  • The house is empty. There is no-one in it. (= There isn’t anyone in it)

Not + anything

  • I can’t remember anything.

Not = not + anything

  • She said nothing. (= She didn’t say anything)

  • There’s nothing to eat. (= There isn’t anything to eat)

Section C

We can use nobody / no-one / nothing at the beginning of a sentence or alone to answer a question

  • That house on the corner is empty. Nobody lives there.

  • A: Who were you just speaking to?
    B: No-one.

  • Nothing happened today, it was a quiet and relaxing day.

  • A: What did you say?
    B: Nothing.

Section D

Remember:

negative verb + anybody / anyone / anything

positive verb + nobody / no-one / nothing

  • He doesn’t know anything. (NOT he doesn’t know nothing)

  • Don’t tell anybody. (NOT don’t tell nobody)

  • There is nothing to do in this town. (NOT there isn’t nothing to do)

Lesson Notes

  • Housewarming; (noun) a party celebrating a move to a new home

    • My friend had a housewarming party, and we bought him some glasses as a housewarming gift.

  • We can use no one or no-one, both are acceptable forms of spelling, however noone is never used.

  • Compare these questions and answers

    • A: Who saw you?
      B: No one saw me.

    • A: Who did you see?
      B: I saw no one.

  • The following sentence is a double negative, these types of sentences should be avoided since they are confusing

    • “No one said nothing.”; a better way to say this would be “No one said anything”
