Words & Phrases

  • Canada Day (July 1) is a modern celebration of a clearly defined historical event, with vibrant celebrations and patriotic displays.

  • Japan’s National Foundation Day (February 11) is more symbolic and rooted in mythology, with a more reflective and subdued tone.

  • I coincidentally visited a small shrine near my home today, not because of National Foundation Day.

  • I saw some die-hard fans wearing the flag around their shoulders.

  • Winning athletes are often seen with their flag draped over their shoulders.

  • Some schools and businesses raise and lower the national flag everyday.

    • Many schools have now relaxed their flag policy, so they don’t use it as often.

  • Did your school serve a school lunch?

    • When I was in elementary school we had special pizza days and hot dog days.

  • I was listening to a couple of old men talk about conspiracy theories.

  • Preparing dinner is time consuming, while eating dinner takes no time at all.

Appropriate Language

  • I happened to visit a small shrine near my home today, but not because of National Foundation Day.” (More natural phrasing)

  • “I visited a small shrine near my home today by chance, not because of National Foundation Day.” (Smoother and slightly more formal)
