Words & Phrases

  • Today is December 27. Can we say that Christmas is over?

    • Yes, Christmas is finished.

  • Are you going to a shrine in Kamakura this year? (= future plan)

    • Did you go to a shrine in Kamakura this year? (= past plan)

  • The shrine is about 3 minutes from my house on foot.

    • The shrine is about a three minute walk from my house.

  • The shrine is splendid, even though it doesn’t have a garden.

  • The shrine is imposing, even though it’s surrounded by trees.

  • I still have a rash on the right side of my face.

  • I’m going to the temple by bicycle. (NOT on bicycle)

  • I don’t like to eat out at New Year’s. I don’t like standing in long lines.

  • Buses from Shinyuri cover a large area. They go to a lot of different places.

  • How are the prices at that market? (= specific prices at that market)

  • What did you do on Christmas Eve? (= December 24th)

  • Do you have plans for dinner on Christmas Day? (= December 25th)

  • What do Canadians do on Boxing Day? (= December 26th)

  • Is the restaurant near Machida Station? (NOT the Machida station)

  • OPA is near the Shinyurigaoka station building.

  • I bought a cheese platter that we ate with our anniversary dinner.

  • I prefer home cooking to eating out at a restaurant.

    • I made three dishes for the party, a salad, soup and roasted chicken.

Grammar

  • We don’t need to use “the” when talking about the location of a specific place.

    • “Machida station” refers to a specific location, so “the” is not necessary

  • We need to use “the” when talking about a specific building (= the Shinyurigaoka station building)

Appropriate Language

  • Splendid; means very beautiful, impressive, or excellent. It’s used to describe something that is high quality or visually striking.

  • Imposing; means grand, impressive or has a strong presence.

  • Home cooking; food that is prepared and cooked at home

  • Dishes; often refers to food that is served
