Words & Phrases

  • I learned to bake cakes and sweets from my grandmother.

    • I took private baking and cooking lessons. We watched the instructor cook.

  • She taught us how to make casual food.

    • We learned how to make simple meals.

    • We were taught how to prepare everyday food.

  • There’s a triangular building in Nakano. (NOT triangle)

  • Construction costs have risen sharply.

    • It’s getting costly to build a new house.

  • I participated in the citizen choir for Beethoven’s 9th symphony.

    • We practiced every Friday evening for several months.

  • The choir had 300 singers, and the orchestra had 150 musicians. The music hall can seat around 2000 people.

  • Has anyone started their end of year cleaning?

    • What do you do for end of year cleaning?

    • It’s difficult and tricky to clean the window tracks, especially the outside ones!

Appropriate Language

  • The world ‘construct’ sounds more technical or formal than ‘build’, it’s more suited for professional or academic contexts. For casual conversation, ‘build’ is more natural

    • (Formal) It’s getting costly to construct a new house.

    • (Casual) It’s getting costly to build a new house.

  • Compound adjectives

    • I have a seven-year-old granddaughter.

      • My granddaughter is seven years old.

    • I live in a two-story house.

      • My house is two stories tall.

    • I’m going on a six-day holiday.

      • I’m going on holiday for six days.
