Lesson Plan August 23 2024

Topic: Have / Get Something Done

Section A

Look at the two situations and study the explanation.

  • “I cut my hair every month.”

  • “I have my hair cut every month.”

We use the structure have something done when we arrange for somebody to do something for us.

  • My car was dirty so I had it washed.

  • We didn’t want to cook, so we had a pizza delivered.

  • My computer is working again. I had my grandson fix it.

In informal English, we can also use get instead of have.

  • My car was dirty so I got it washed.

  • We didn’t want to cook, so we got a pizza delivered.

  • My computer is working again. I got my grandson to fix it.

We can also use have something done when somebody does something bad to us.

  • James had his nose broken in a fight.

  • I had my phone stolen while I was on vacation.

Lesson Notes

Words & Phrases

  • I am planning to take the Narita Express from Shinjuku tomorrow. The airport shuttle from Shinyurigaoka isn’t convenient these days.

Appropriacy

  • The term "Limousine Bus" is commonly used in Japan, but outside Japan, "Airport shuttle" or "airport express bus" would be more universally understood.

Have & Get something done

  • Your glasses are bent. You should them (mended / fixed / repaired).

  • I thought that vase was broken. When did you get it (put back together / fixed / repaired / reassembled)?

    • "Put back together" is a phrasal verb that means to fix something that was broken. For example, if a toy is in pieces, you put it back together by joining the pieces to make it whole again.

  • She’s having her hair (cut / done). (“Done” is more suitable than “dressed”)

  • Their windows are no longer dirty. What have they done?

    • They’ve had their windows cleaned.

    • They’ve had them cleaned.
