Lesson Notes August 15, 2023 (Vocabulary Building)

  • We can use “in-laws” when talking about your spouses family, especially the parents

    • During Oban I visited my in-laws’ house and grave to tidy them both up.

    • During the holidays, we send our kids to our in-laws’.

    • This weekend, we are having dinner with my parents and in-laws. (= my parents and my spouses parents)

  • There are various terms used to describe sports players available for team selection: roster, line-up, squad.

Cities & People

  • A repairman

    • A custodian; which is similar to “a janitor”

    • A superintendent (the super)

Numbers

  • Some English speakers use “and” between the hundreds and the tens; the comma (,) in written numbers does not mean “and”

    • 310 = three hundred and ten

    • 5,642 = five thousand, six hundred and forty-two

Ordinal Numbers (Pay attention to the use of “the”

  • Dates have written and spoken forms; the written form varies from country to country

    • August 15, 2023 = August the fifteenth, thousand (and) twenty-three

      • The fifteenth of August

  • Kings & Queens etc

    • Henry VIII = Henry the Eighth

    • Louis XIV = Louis the Fourteenth

  • Floors

    • I live on the fourth floor.

    • His office is on the thirty-second floor.

  • Rankings

    • Tokyo is ranked first for world’s largest cities.

      • Tokyo is first.

  • My favourite baseball team came in second place.

    • The second place team is my favourite baseball team.
