Topic: On Holiday

Lesson Notes August 15, 2023 (Elementary)

  • Overgrow; (verb) overgrew (past) / overgrown (past participle) especially of plants, flowers, buses and trees which has grown too much and looks messy

    • My parents backyard is really overgrown, it looks like a jungle.

  • Herbicide (kill plants / weeds)

  • Pesticide (kills insects, bugs, etc)

  • Hoarder (noun) a person who keeps everything, especially old things that are unneeded

    • I think one of the neighbours is a hoarder, their house is full of junk and stuff.

  • Air cleaner can also be called “air purifier”

  • “Kabi killer” is a mold and mildew (spray / cleaner). We might also call it “a bleach cleaner”

  • Recently, I think my ears are bad. I have trouble hearing.

On Holiday

  • In conversation when someone asks you an opinion question, it’s often polite to ask them “what about you?” Or “how about you?”

  • If the hotel is over five floors, I want to stay at the top. (NOT has above five floors)

  • Amenities; (plural noun) useful things found in buildings, especially hotels (minibar, tea kettle, hair drier, shampoo, soap etc)

    • The cheap hotel had no bathtub, my legs were tired and I wanted to relax in the tub.

  • When a question is like this: “What do you like to do when you are travelling on the bus or on the train? What about in the car?”, let the person answer the first question, then ask the second question 

    • A: What do you like to do when you are travelling on the bus or on the train?
      B: I like to watch the scenery from the window.
      A: What about in the car?
      B: I like to read when I am in the car.

  • When I am at a museum I like to look at paintings. (NOT watch paintings)

    • We use “watch” for things that move; a movie, a sports game, a dance performance etc
