Lesson Notes April 25, 2023 (Vocabulary Building)

  • A: Starting from next month the price is going up ¥500.
    B: That’s a big price (jump / hike).

  • Inside the area there were some small (food / drink / souvenir) stands.

  • The Goshuin from this shrine is embroidered, it’s very unique.

The Internet

Note that ‘Internet’ can be written either with a capital ‘I’ or a lower case ‘i’ in modern usage. However, the adjective ‘internet’ (as in ‘internet use’) is usually with a lower case initial letter.

  • Do you prefer to buy CDs, download or stream music from the internet?

  • Browse; to look at

    • I was browsing for a t-shirt when I found this really cute cat print one.

    • I sat at the hair salon for 20 minutes browsing through old magazines.

  • A: Why is is important to log out after using a public computer?
    B: Someone might try to access my email or information.

  • Google; (verb) search for information about (someone or something) on the internet using the search engine Google

  • Symbols; in different contexts the same symbol can have different meanings and pronunciations

    • / (forward) slash, \ backslash

    • # (Internet, Instagram, Twitter) hashtag

      • # (Telephone) pound sign

      • # (music) sharp

      • # number sign

    • www = World Wide Web

    • Https = Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure
